Vocal cords are unique and irreplaceable. It’s very easy to ruin them, and yet when we were born, all of us without exception, we were able to cry at the top of our lungs all day long, for several days in a row. No newborn child is voiceless after crying. You actually learn to use your voice every day, through your ears. It’s enough to get a cold to permanently change your voice, it’s enough to have some earwax in your ears to transform it, it’s enough to live with someone with vocal defects to learn something harmful to the vocal cords. Clearly, even if you take voice training superficially or from an immature teacher, you can develop the same problems.
Another great truth of which I am a strong supporter is that the treasure hidden within the human voice, if it is not cared for or if it endures wrong teachings, can be wasted and ruined in a very short time. Few people are aware that you can actually learn something wrong. For example, you can learn wrong how to spell a word, how to perform a calculation and even how to use your voice. There are even fewer people who think, for a single moment, that there can exist also a bad master. When the subject is technical it can be easy to recognize when the master makes a mistake, but with the voice, this can happen when it is too late and he/she has already seriously compromised your voice. That’s why I decided to write a guide and call it “The Art of Keeping a Healthy Voice”.
Here is the video testimony he wanted to release for me, but especially for you, my student Federico. Too often I meet or receive email from young men who remain without voice after singing. Many are self-taught, but the majority come from classes and singing teachers.
The message must be of comfort to you: you can get the voice you had the ability to dream of, if you do things with perseverance, dedication and, of course, the right Vocal Coach!
Many people who approach voice training rely on chance as if they were gambling on lottery numbers. Often they do not have any means, sometimes not even an idea, for assessing the teacher in front of them and to whom they will entrust their voice. This is where it is good to explain what are the yardsticks for measuring the skills of a vocal coach.
The first yardstick is to evaluate his/her voice. And that is where the shoe pinches! In fact, very often I find myself in front of people or other vocal coaches who want to evaluate skills based on how someone sings. Many people are surprised because they can’ t find on YouTube or other similar websites any trace of my “singing” performances as if it was mandatory to show them to be hired. They can’t find any because I have chosen not to show them.
This morning, standard time has finally come into effect here on the east coast of the United States.
Each week I am lucky enough to travel the world and enter the homes of my students who are scattered all over the world. But this means having an agenda that must take into account the various time zones and the different adjustments that occur behind the scenes. I will talk to you about the different holidays that each country observes in a next post!
I prefer customers from Hawaii. Partly because of the colors of the rooms and voices, and partly because they never change the time. They always use the Hawaiian time so with them I just have to be careful of the time of the country where I am, that is, in which of the six time zones in the United States or in which of the eleven time zones in Europe I am.
The Hawaiian Islands are in the time zone minus ten hours compared to Greenwich Mean Time, which is the zero time zone.
Then I have all the customers scattered around the U.S. ranging from the time zone of the West Coast, for example Los Angeles, minus eight to that of the East Coast, like Boston and New York, minus five.
Obviously there are two americas and I’m lucky enough to work with Argentines and Brazilians, other countries with very involving colors and rhythms, which are in the time zone minus three.
Then we move on to Europe, with England in time zone zero and the bulk of my Italian, French, Swiss and German customers in time zone plus one.
Then we move on to another hot country, Saudi Arabia, which stands at more than three, and Oman, which stands at more than four.
Russia is a complicated country, the Moscow area stands at more than three, while the rest of the country reaches even more than twelve. Luckily my customers are all mainly Muscovites.
My most demanding customers, those who are in “modern” China, essentially Hong Kong and Beijing, follow closely. Like the Hawaiian islands, they never change their legal/solar time and they stay in the time zone plus eight. I’ve also had customers in Japan, but generally they prefer to come here to the United States for Full Immersions.
Last, but not least, my favourite customers arrive, the New Zealanders who are in their time zone plus twelve and who are the first, or last, to change daylight saving time and solar time.
In practice, my typical workday takes place in 32 hours of work, scattered around the world, in three different languages!
The time changes for this year are also over. It starts again on March 11th when Canada will be the first to adopt daylight saving time and will end on April 1st with New Zealand.
The foliage period, when trees start to change colour and prepare for winter, attracts many tourists to the Boston area.
This weekend, those who have chosen to do Full Immersion with me are lucky enough to be able to take a ride around Lake Winnipesauke on a train that takes tourists to White Mountain, along a four-hour loop route, to see the explosion of color in the surrounding forests and the valley.
Today I have the pleasure to accompany them and since by now I am also known by the local people here in New Hampshire, I am lucky to be able to have the opportunity to visit the locomotive. Something that has the atmosphere of an ancient and powerful mistery. In America the railway lines are almost all powered by diesel engines, there are no electric poles, so the experience is even more enjoyable, thanks to the low frequency hum of the engine.

Since January 2010 I’m teaching also Online with excellent success.
Obviously the Online teaching is quite different from the face to face version, but still can guarantee a good level of success in quite short time.
In this case you will still have a preliminary online session with me, where we will find if and how to proceed. My lessons are not in karaoke style and they are always considering your vocal health at first.
